Big Bang Redux
September 8, 2008 – 12:49 pmPolitics are driving me crazy. I can’t stop reading the latest “buzz” from the bullshit trail… I mean, campaign trail. My last four posts have been politics related. I need a break.
How about some science?
In July, I posted a top ten list of things I can’t wait for. Number one on my list, with a bullet, was the day scientists fired up the doomsday machine, aka: the large hadron collider. The machine became popular through its depiction in the Dan Brown novel, Angels & Demons. Well, the machine has been running for a month, and is now ready to collide some particles!
The goal of the machine is to replicate the big bang as scientists search for Higgs boson, also known as the God particle. They are looking for the source of the universe.
Some scientists actually want to be proven wrong. Because if something surprising happens, then that would open up larger possibilities. Some theorize that the machine could generate a black hole, or a worm hole in space. Now, this sounds a bit farfetched, but what if the machine DOES open a worm hole? Does that mean that hyperspace travel is actually possible? I don’t know, but it sure is exciting.
Now, there are some who say that this machine is dangerous. That opening a black hole or worm hole or any other kind of hole could end the world. It is this end of the world fear that gave the LHC the nickname, doomsday machine.
I have mix feelings about the end of the world. On one hand, it would kind of be a bummer. All the big plans I have for myself would have to be put on hold. On the other hand, if the world is going to end, I want to be there to see it. It could be one hell of a show. Also, recent polls show McCain opening up a lead over Barack Obama. A November win for McCain means the world is ending in four years anyway.
At least the doomsday machine would be a cool way to go.

Where did you get your blog layout from? I’d like to get one like it for my blog.

I’ve always imagined myself perishing at the hand of man’s hubris. Bring it ON!

Nice article - I posted one with the same exact title a few days ago. I guess I’m not as creative as I thought I was!
